Sacred Saint Guan's Perfect Text on Enlightenment
Guan Gung
(Part I)
The Sacred Deity said
"People living in this world (should)
honor loyalty to the ruler,
perform one's filial duty and have integrity in such matters.
On humanity, not being able to look people straight in the eye,
sowing discord in one's scope of operation and not being loyal to the rule(r),
failing to perform one's filial duty and lacking integrity in such matters;
although one is here in this world,
one's conscious is already dead.
This is called dragging out an ignoble existence.
In this mortal world, the conscience is the spirit
and the spirit is the conscience.
If the heart is clear,
then the spirit is clear.
If one disregards the dictates of one's own conscience,
In that case, one is cheating one's own spirit.
Therefore the ancient ones of noble character and virtue follow the 3 Reverences and the 4 Knowledges
          and exersize caution.
Don't say one can in a dark obscure place or room.
The roof may still leak in some clear conscience.
One moment moving, the next still.
The gods (will) examine and study (one),
and one will be under the glare,
                                    naturally.
The judgment will be clear and evident,
without the slightest deviation.
Lewdness is the head of all sins.
Filial piety is the source of hundreds of good behavior patterns.
However, there is still an opposing principle.
In a heart that is abashed,
don't say 'If it's advantageous, (then) do it
(This is) the mortal world's rationalization.
In a heart with a clear conscience
don't say 'If it's not advantageous, (then) don't do it.
           If one fails my teachings,
                  please try my sword.
  Respect heaven and earth,
    perform rites for the gods
                and one's ancestors.
        Be filial to one's parents
and loyal to the king('s law).
Value the principles of your teachers
        and love your brother(s)
                      Trust your friends
Be on friendly terms with a clan
and with persons from the same rural neighborhood.
          A nice husband and wife
teach their children and grandchildren.
{Then the deity began to speak in stanzas}
