開山祖師 The Founder
During the Qing Dynasty, when the Manchus were in power, they picked martial experts amongst the Han people. They had absolute
power to spare, kill, give and take at will. They arbitrarily deceived people. Who knew the pressure was so great? Meanwhile the
counter-resistance kept getting stronger. There were willful and ambitious men, with numerous stratagem for resistance directed
towards 反清復明 "Oppose the Ching (Qing) and restore the Ming". In that year, the Guangdong Zhaoqing government office, there
lived a rich youngster who was named 李祖寬Lei Joe-foon. His father was one of the successful candidates of provintial
examinations for military officers. But he was unreasonably falsley incriminated by the Qing government hired ruffians, and was
executed due to the fabricated charge.
Joe-foon had studied his fathers martial arts. The family also had excess capital. So what he did was, become friends with heroes in
the martial arts world. During his freetime, he would hang out with them in the courtyard. On the surface he appeared to drink wine,
have fun, act like nothing matters , and did not do anything productive. But he was actually cherishing a lofty aspiration, which was
to overthrow the Qing Dynasty, and take revenge for his father.
When a suitable Fujian Province tea merchant's son arrived, whose name was 洪熙 Hung Xi. Because the family had property and
was rich, the maid servant called him 洪熙官Hung Xi-Guan which means Hung Xi the "official". Xi-Guan liked the martial arts. He got into
少林寺Shaolin Temple to study, did obeisance with 至善禪師 Zen master Zhi Shan. He went through many years of study and
practice, unitl he became skilled in martial arts, just then, the royal government burnt down Shaolin Temple. So he ran away back
to 廣東Guangdong, to Lei Joe-foon's place. These two people had a common goal. After they sparred,
Hung Xi-Guan's became Lee Joe-foons master. They practiced in the morning and the evening. Besides teaching everything Hung
Xi-Guan studied in Shaolin Temple, he also collected the strong
points from the five southern shaolin styles and created the 五形拳Five Animal Form.
He passed on the secrets to Lei Joe-foon.
Hung Xi-Guan lived with Lei Joe-foon for more than two years. But for the counter-Qing movement, he could
not but depart. When
Hung Xi-Guan bid farewell, he felt he must carry forward the 洪家拳術Hung Ga style of martial arts. Not
long after Hung Xi-Guan had
departed, Lei Joe-foon encountered a calamity. Because he sealed the Sichuan bailiff 雷震天Leui
Zhentian's confidential report. So
the royal government issued a warrant for his arrest. Leui Zhentian came accompanied by his fellow
policemen, and attempted to
"bring him to justice". But when Leui Zhentian began to fight, he found that he could not beat
Lei Joe-foon. Lei Joe-foon beat him to
death in front of the step. When the other policemen saw that, they instantly dispersed.
After Lei Joe-foon caused that trouble, he abandoned the family and left in a hurry. He fled to 八排山
Mt. Bapai in Guandong.
Joined the 青華寺
Qing Hwa temple, shaved his head and became a monk. His Buddhist name was 雲彌Won Nay.
besides Buddhist ceremonies,
Won Nay industriously and painstakenly practiced fighting skills. Then created 撥香樁掌功
"Transfer Incense Pile Palm Gung".
One day, after Won Nay had just finished practicing gung-fu in front of the temple, he suddenly sees
two great hawks, in airborne
assaults. Turning, seething and soaring, up and down with exceptional agility. Then he collated that
with the five animal form, which
master Hung had passed on, coordinated with the daily and nightly hard training of "Transfer
Incense Pile Palm Gung", collected and
synthesized 洪拳佛掌 (Hung Kyun Fat Jeung) Hung Fist and Buddha Palm. Later, the common
people abbriviated the name and
called it 洪佛派Hung Fat Pai (the Hung Fut faction). This is how Lei Joe-foon became the
founder and first generation of Hung Fut Pai.
第二代掌門 The second generation Grand Master
Zen master Won Nay continued his practices in the Qinghua temple. In a flash it was already 30 years.
Then, during the Jintian
uprising, 洪秀全 Hung Sauchyun uncovered the counter-Ching groups, straight under 金陵Jinling
(todays Nanjing) and had
established the 太平天國Heavenly Kingdom of Peace (1850-1864). Then recognized that the
Manchurian Qing Dynasty "needed to
end". Then Won Nay made his mind up to descend the mountain, and instruct new disciples in
fighting skills. Also to continue
efforts for his unfulfilled wish. On the pretext of wandering for fame, from Guangxi to Guangdong. He
arrived at 鼎湖山的慶雲寺
Mt. Dinghu Qingyun temple to lodge for for a night, revisting the old place. He found that the people
were living in chaos, but felt that
the average people were exceptionally strong willed regarding the counter-Ching mood.
So they secretely got money to help the Heavenly Kingdom of Peace. Amongst the anti-Ching group
members, there was a
youth by the name of 黃永基Huang Yongchi, who was zealous regarding the anti-Ching movement.
Huang Yongchi's father was in west Nanzhen's paper industry business and business was exuberant.
The profits were quite
abundant. As for the political situation of the day, people needed to study self-defense and Huang
Yongchi also wanted to study.
When his father got old and retired, he handed over the shop for Huang Yongchi to manage. His
natural disposition was that of a
chivalrous person. He was generous in aiding other people. The counter-Ching ambition was
overflowing and was showing in peoples
words and expressions. He became friends with a crowd of slaughterers. The good and evil
intermingled.
There was one time a man by the name of 陳金剛Chen Jin-gang who would start the coup d'etat
in Seundoc, but he needed 2000
taels of silver to stage the rebellion. Huang Yongchi felt it would be righteous to fund and carry the silver
to Seundoc. But on the way
they were robbed by a gang of dozens and were overwhelmed by sheer numbers. Then came an aged
monk who broke his vow (not to
mame) to help and with his staff he blinded the ring leaders left eye. So when the rest of the gang
saw what the old monk did to the
ringleader, they scattered in a panic. Huang Yongchi thanked the old monk for saving his life and
asked him his name. Actually Zen
master Won Nay had earlier clearly understood all, was worldy, wise and played it safe.
Huang Yongchi did obeisance with Won Nay at the 金山寺Jinshan Temple. Over
the course of time, the disciple would diligently study gung-fu with the monk. By the time Huang Yongchi
became accomplished, Zen master Won Nay died in Jinshan Temple. Huang Yongchi, in
commemoration for his first teacher and founder decided the ten words that would represent Hung Fat
Pai for the next ten
generations. Those words are 善Shan 始Yi 拔Ba 生Sheng 成Cheng 寶Bao 化Hua 用Yong 英Ying
and 賢Xian. These ten
characters differntiated the generational spread of the faction.
Huang Yongchi built a consecrated palace for Zen master
Won Nay and named it 善善堂Shan-Shan Tang. Huang Yongchi became the second generation
grandmaster.
第三代掌門 The third generation grandmaster
Later Huang Yongchi would leave Jinshan Temple, to open a Hung Fut gung-fu school in 佛山Foshan
and called it 怡怡堂Yi-Yi Tang.
Practicng day after day increased his fame. One day, Huang Yongchi strolled to Guangzhou City.
There was a company of ManChu
soldiers, who were galloping to the East suburbian field. As soon as they got to the main east gate,
in their haste, a youth
unexpectedly was unable to evade the oncoming horses. The leading flag soldier knocked the youth
down.
That flag soldier got off his horse, and maliciously used a leather whip on that youth.
The youth was unable to avoid it. Huang Yongchi saw this
and was unable to restrain thimself from getting angry. With one stance he controlled the leather
whip, then he took it away from the
soldier and continued to beat him. When the other flag soldiers arrived and saw with their own
eyes their companion being bullied,
they encircled Huang Yongchi and raised their weapons to attack.
But HuangYongchi's fast eyes and hands were continually striking.
The flag soldier's horses all fled in disorder. All of the flags soldiers were injured and left
groaning on the ground. Huang Yongchi
helped the youth up onto a horse and in one breath ran like the wind to the West Village.
Originally that youth was named 李同寬
Lei Tung-foon who was a waiter for a West Village convenience store. Huang Yongchi recalled that Zen
master Won Nay was
originaly surnamed Lei as well, and
believed there was a connexion. He also sensed the youths moral behavior was pure,
good-hearted, loyal and would be reliable.
So at the store in the West Village, he accepted him as a student and taught him all the gung-fu he
knew. After more than ten years
of hard training, Lei Tung-foon achieved the martial power of Hung Fut Pai and became the third
generation grandmaster,
拔拔堂(or Ba-Ba Tang), of Hung Fut Pai.
When Lei Tung-foon became accomplished, Huang Yongchi was old and the declared that he going to
wander around the world.
After Lei Tung-foon properly buried Zen master Won Nay in his hometown, while in the village housing,
he was drinking liquor to find
relief of boredom. After he got drunk he created the "Drunken Eight Immortals" form. After he mastered
this form, the gung-fu of Hung
Fut Pai advanced a step further. After Lei Tung-foon occupied the township for a period of time,
he went to Gaoyao County city to
teach the gung-fu of Hung Fut Pai under the sign of Ba-Ba Tang where he taught countless disciples.
第 四代掌門 The fourth grandmaster
One day, there came a young taoist priest approximately 14 or fifteen years old, who was seeking the
help of Lei Tung-foon, and
called hisself 何道旦Haw Doudan. Because his family was poor, he lived at the
七星岸普賢道院 "Big Dipper Shore Universal Virtue
Daoist Temple" to lead a pious life. Shortly after he entered the temple, there came a taoist priest by
the name of 福緣道士Fok
Yun, but he was a taoist priest from a heterodox faction. With his strange techniques, he committed
all kinds of evil deeds and
caused disturbances at the temple and therefore he was ordered to leave.
Who would imagine that priest Fok Yun would become enraged, and seize the opportunity to
demonstrate his powers.
He went to slap his palm on a document case, and split the firm wood on the spot and stated that
he was going to take over the
Universal Virtue Daoist temple. Because Haw Doudan knew that Lei Tung-foon's gung-fu was
good, he came purposely to seek his
help. Lei Tung-foon was moved by Haw Doudan's plight, and was willing to help.
Together they went back to the Daoist temple.
Meanwhile priest FokYun was just taking possesion of the temple, and in front of Lei Tung-foon
proposed that he should please
leave. Then priest Fok Yun suddenly attacked Lei Tung-foon with his iron palm.
But Lei Tung-foon repeled priest Fok Yun's technique. Priest Fok Yun then knew he could
not beat Tung-foon. He then
bowed his head compliantly, tidied up his valuables and left immediately.
The original head of the temple expressed gratitude after
Lei Tung-foon upheld justice.
Lei Tung-foon earlier had had plans to look for an intelligent promising youth to be the grandmaster of the
fourth generation.
He thought how Haw Doudan was wise and not a laymen and intended to accept him as a student so he
could protect the temple,
and especially proposed to the head priest that he allowed Doudan to study with him.
After Haw Doudan painstakenly studied
diligently for several years at the Universal Virtue Daoist temple,
he continued with concentrating on cultivation. After passing
through a suitable amount of time to ponder, he created the 十四肘 14 elbow form.
By then Lei Tung-foon was old, and soon
thereafter returned to Mt. Dao (the paradise where the souls of good people dwell after death).
Haw Doudan then propagated the 生生堂 "Sheng-Sheng Tang" generation
in the Daoist temple, teaching the taoist priests martial
arts and became fourth generation grandmaster of Hung Fat Pai.
After Haw Doudan created the 14 elbow form,
the gung-fu of Hung Fat Pai had now increased by one more form.
But he thought to
himself, he shouldn't restrict himself to just teaching Taoist priests,
but that he should teach Hung Fut to the troubled outside world.
He made up his mind to look for an apprentice who was a laymen.
第五代掌門 The grandmaster of the fifth generation
When repairs were being made on the Daoist temple, there was a young janitor who donated his services,
whose name was 吳通
Wu-tung, his physical strength was greater than that of the average man and also worked diligently
until his hair was completely
white. The commoners all called him 白毛通 "Bak Moutung". Although he was an odd job man,
he thoroughly understood
literature. Early every morning when Bak Moutung would begin working, he would see the taoist
priests practicing martial arts in the
courtyard. He hoped very much that Daoist priest Haw Dandou would except him as a student,
so he could be engaged in studying
Hung Fut martial arts. Then they agreed that Bak Moutung would do obeisance and
Haw Doudan became his master. From that time
on Bak Moutung became an insider at the Universal Virtue Daoist temple.
He became the permanent cook and thoroughly absorbed
in studying the martial arts.
This went on for 7 or 8 years. Because of his painstakeing study, he rose up amongst the ranks of taoist
priests, eventually
becoming the best martial artists in the group. Haw Doudan then recognized that Hung Fut needed a
new fifth generation person to
teach other people, and felt that Bak Moutung was the most suitable. So then he urged Bak Moutung
to descend the mountain, to
develope and carry forward the martial arts of Hung Fut Pai. Bak Moutung then said good-bye to
Haw Doudan. After leaving his
hometown he went to teach the style in Haw Ga Town.
